A bore sight laser exists for one reason: to save you rounds and range time. Most of the mistakes that show up around this tool do not come from a bad optic or a cheap bore sight. They come from treating a genuinely useful shortcut like it is the finish line instead of the starting point. That single misunderstanding causes more wasted range trips than every other mistake on this list combined.
The Mistake That Undoes Everything Else
Bore sighting aligns your optic with the physical bore. That is all it does. It says nothing about bullet drop, wind drift or the specific ballistic path of the ammunition you are actually going to shoot. A laser dot that looks perfectly centered through your reticle tells you your mounting is correct. It tells you nothing about where the round will land at 50 yards.
The mistake is skipping live fire confirmation because the bore sight looked close enough. It almost always does look close enough, that is what the tool is designed to do. Confirming with actual rounds downrange is not an optional extra step tacked onto the end. It is the entire second half of the job.
Four More That Quietly Cost You Time
Turning windage and elevation dials while holding the firearm unsupported almost guarantees the reticle drifts off the laser between adjustments. A sandbag or a cheap bipod fixes this completely. There is no version of freehand bore sighting that ends well.
Most optics move in 1 MOA increments per click. Guessing at a large turn and hoping it lands close is how people end up overshooting past the laser dot entirely and starting the whole process over. Small moves, recheck, repeat.

Most of the advice on bore sighting fixates on getting the laser dead center in the reticle. That matters, but it is not where most of the wasted time actually happens. The real time sink is people who nail the alignment and then either skip live confirmation entirely or show up at the range without a stable rest, undoing the precision they just spent ten minutes building.
